What should you look for while buying a used drone?
ON THE GROUND
Visual Inspection
Inspecting your drone motors, its body, propellers and its controllers for any physical scratches, dents, damage, scratches, signs of impact or any other signs of serious wear and tear is really significant. If purchased second hand, there may be minor cosmetic defects, but this will not affect the functioning of the drone. Inspect the en route camera lens for any sort of scratches or dents.
Watch Gimbal Startup
When triggered, the camera gimbal must move from one corner to another to perform a trigger sequence. Expect smooth, automated movements from one edge to the other. In case the movement of the drone is unstable or appears damaged, the gimbal can be faulty.
Manual Gimbal Movement
Prior to the takeoff, make sure the gimbal responds smoothly by moving the gimbal control wheel while the aircraft is powered on. Raise the drone and move it slowly to view if the gimbal trails the movement.
Test Photo as well as Video Settings
Before takeoff, change the aperture (if suitable), zoom lens (if suitable), shutter speed, ISO, white balance and all other technical settings while the aircraft is powered on to ensure sensitivity. Take test photos and test videos. Access the drone’s playback display to verify the appropriate recording quality.
Check Battery Charge Cycle
Buying a used DJI Intelligent Flight Battery can be a daunting task. When the aircraft is switched on, you can check the battery status and check the battery’s charge cycle in the Flight Controller menu.
Calibrate Joystick

Calibrate IMU
The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is an onboard chipset built inside the drone that solidifies the drone during flight. The IMU uses data from the fitted onboard accelerometer, gyroscope, thermometer, and barometer.
The system reviews specific forces, angular velocities, and positions (including heading, pitch, and roll angles) of the aircraft. Basically, this lets the drone remain stable, upright and level during flight. This is especially significant when shooting to protect a level and smooth flight. If you notice skewed mounts or strange patterns of flights, calibrate the IMU to see if that improves performance!
Calibrate Compass
You will most likely need to rectify your compass if you are near metal objects, cities, power lines, satellites, etc. Don’t get confused by this error and run the drone through the calibration prompt to see if the calibration is successful. Calibrating the compass correctly can take about 23 times.
IN AIR
In Flight Gimbal Mode
Control the gimbal while flying to make sure it moves and eventually works properly. When working with a UAV, remember that you can always settle the sensitivity and the settings regarding its speed to get a more pictorial and filmic look.
In Flight Gimbal Mode Adjustment
Fly the drone high enough to see the horizon (according to local altitude regulations). If the horizontal line is skewed, regulate the gimbal shaft to fully level it. If it works all fine, then the stabilizer is working appropriately.
DJI is known for its meandering skyline, and that shouldn’t discourage you from buying a drone. You can adjust the roll settings, so it is common to do this several times during the flight to ensure it’s perfectly level.
Check Gimbal Stability In Flight
Keep the gimbal stable while the drone is taking flight in the air. Make some twists, turns, and shoot quickly to see if the gimbal works as anticipated. By design, the gimbal should smooth out movement and eliminate judder. In case the gimbal is not working appropriately, it will be very observable in the video stream during flight.
Check Quality of Video Channel
Test your drone from a distance and monitor the video to ensure a stable link. If the two antennas on the remote control are broken, the picture quality displayed on the smartphone may be affected. Do a stress test by flying a distance you are comfortable flying. The presence of magnetic hindrance or obstructions may increase signal interruptions that are not the result of misuse or damage.
Test ‘Return To Home’ Feature
Before buying a second-hand drone, it is very important to test the return-to-home (RTH) function. In the worst case, this will not work and will cause a rebound. Before take-off, make sure that the auto-return point is marked in the same location as your current location upon the map.
After verification, the drone takes off and flies at least 200 feet or 100 feet. Let the drone hover in place for a few minutes, then start off the Return to Home function and wait till the aircraft returns and automatically lands near the point it took off.
Test Hyper-timelapse Feature along with the Smart-Controller Feature
Enter the menu of the smart controller to check out some features. Set up a few waypoints in the hyperlapse feature and have the drone fly in a sequence to keep it upright and launch at the correct intervals. View it on your memory card to check how photos or videos are actually stored.
Toggle Between the Positions, Sports and Tripod Mode
Toggle the switch situated on the right-hand side of the monitor to see Sport mode and Tripod mode. Tripod mode provides detailed movie scenes in a very gentle and slow motion, while in the Sport mode, the motors gain more speed.
